dramatic goal lifts ice hawks to victory

Mak Barden's shorthanded goal, with 14 seconds remaining in regulation time, lifted the Delta Ice Hawks to a 3-2 victory over the Aldergrove Kodiaks tonight in Ladner. Delta's Scott Lapp, was outstanding in goal and kept the Ice Hawks in the game for the first 40 minutes as the Kodiaks dominated, out-shooting Delta 29-17. The third period was a different story, with the puck almost exclusively in the Aldergrove half of the ice. Overtime looked like a certainty until a costly turnover, in the dying seconds, resulted in the winning goal. The victory moves Delta to within two points of Richmond, heading into Thursday's huge match-up with the Sockeyes. The Kodiaks, who have been on fire for the last two months, dropped their second game in a row. Barden, with three points tonight, is now eight points up on Spencer Quon in the scoring race. Delta's Aaron Merrick became the first player to reach 30 goals this season when he scored in the second period.
